HISTORICAL CONTEXT & LINEAGE

Sun Style Taijiquan represents one of the most intellectually and technically sophisticated developments in the history of Chinese Internal Martial Arts. Founded by the legendary Sun Lutang, often referred to as the 'Martial Saint,' this style is a brilliant synthesis of three major internal systems: Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, and Taijiquan. This instructional and appreciative DVD is presented by Master Sun Jianyun, the daughter and direct lineage successor of the founder. As the president of the Beijing Sun-style Taijiquan Research Committee and a recognized national treasure in the martial arts world, Master Sun Jianyun offers an authoritative perspective on the historical heritage of her family's art. This program serves as a visual archive, preserving the refined movements and philosophical depth of the Sun lineage for future generations of practitioners and historians.

TECHNICAL FORM & APPLICATIONS

The 'Appreciation of Sun-style Taijiquan and Weapon Routines' showcases the breadth of the system's technical library. The program includes essential performances of the barehanded forms as well as specialized weapon play, such as the straight sword. The choreography is characterized by its fluid structure and cohesive choreography, emphasizing the 'Open and Close' (Kai He) principle that is the hallmark of the style. Master Sun Jianyun demonstrates how the agility of Baguazhang's footwork and the direct, explosive intent of Xingyiquan are harmonized within the yielding and neutralizing framework of Taijiquan. Each Form & Applications is presented as a study in continuous, unbroken motion, reflecting the 'floating clouds and flowing water' aesthetic that Sun Lutang perfected.

BIOMECHANICS & INTERNAL ALCHEMY

From a biomechanical standpoint, the Sun Style is unique for its upright postures and nimble footwork, known as 'Hu Bu' or the follow-up step. This program illustrates how these movements facilitate superior neuromuscular coordination and structural integrity. Master Sun Jianyun explains that the power generation, or Fa-Jin (Explosive Power), in the Sun style is subtle and highly efficient, relying on the internal alchemy of breath and intent rather than brute physical force. The 'Open and Close' movements are not merely external gestures but are synchronized with the expansion and contraction of the internal Qi. This focus on internal mechanics ensures that the practitioner develops a unified body structure, where the mind directs the force with absolute precision, achieving a state of 'Agreement in Spirit and Appearance.'

COMBAT APPLICATION & PRACTICAL VALUE

While the aesthetic beauty of the Sun Style is undeniable, this DVD emphasizes its practical value as a functional system of combat application. Master Sun Jianyun highlights the tactical logic behind the movements, showing how the 'Adhere and Follow' principle allows a practitioner to control an opponent's center of gravity. The agility developed through constant circle-walking and follow-up steps provides a significant advantage in both defensive and offensive scenarios. Furthermore, the health-preserving aspects of the Sun style—often called 'Life Enhancement' methods—are woven into the martial training, making it a holistic system for physical and mental well-being. For the serious student, this program offers a rare opportunity to observe the consummate skills of a true master, providing a scientific and culturally rich pathway to achieving martial excellence.

Sun Jianyun: A Life Dedicated to the Legacy of the "Martial Saint"
In the history of modern Chinese martial arts, Sun Jianyun (1914–2003) is more than just a name; she was the bridge between two eras. As the youngest daughter of the legendary Sun Lutang—hailed as the "Martial Saint"—her life serves as a living chronicle of the evolution of traditional martial arts through the 20th century.
1. Childhood in the Courtyard: From Observation to Mastery
Sun Jianyun was born when her father’s fame had already reached its zenith. Growing up in a household frequented by the greatest masters of the age, her childhood was defined by the scent of ink and the rhythm of moving shadows.
A Family Story: Initially, Sun Lutang did not pressure his daughter to train, preferring she lead a gentler life. However, he once discovered her secretly mimicking her elder brothers' drills. He was struck by her natural grasp of the mechanics and spirit of the movements; realizing her innate talent, he finally formally accepted her as a disciple.
The Father-Daughter Bond: By her teens, she was traveling with her father to cities like Nanjing and Shanghai, assisting him at the Jiangsu Provincial Guoshu Institute. Sun Lutang was a demanding teacher, requiring her to master not only the physical arts but also the I Ching and classical literature. This dual education gave her martial style a rare quality: less "street grit" and more "scholarly refinement."
2. Keeping the "Puyang" Flame Alive Through Turmoil
Following Sun Lutang’s passing in 1933, a young Sun Jianyun shouldered the heavy responsibility of preserving the lineage. Through decades of social upheaval and scarcity, she ensured that the flame of Sun-style martial arts never flickered out.
Quiet Perseverance: To make ends meet, she worked as a primary school teacher, but her real work happened after hours. Even during her hardest years, she continued to teach in her cramped courtyard, sharing her knowledge without reservation with anyone who came with a sincere heart.
The Meaning of Her Name: Her name, Jianyun (Sword-Cloud), reflected her father’s hope that she would be as resilient as a blade and as fluid as a cloud. She lived up to this vision, remaining detached from fame and wealth while standing firm as a guardian of tradition.
3. The Later Years: A "Living Dictionary" of Sun Style
As traditional culture saw a resurgence in the 1980s, an elderly Sun Jianyun returned to the center of the martial arts world.
Grandmaster Status: In 1995, she was officially named one of "China’s Top Ten Martial Arts Masters." Younger practitioners who visited her were often stunned that this silver-haired woman remained as light on her feet as a swallow, possessing an internal power that was truly "iron wrapped in cotton."
Unfiltered Tradition: She often remarked, "I am not teaching my own boxing; I am teaching my father’s." She dedicated her life to preserving the exact forms Sun Lutang finalized in his later years, resisting the trend of adding "flowery" movements for public performance. She insisted on the authentic beauty of Sun-style: open-close movements, lively footwork, and natural harmony.
4. Epilogue: A Century of Quiet Devotion
Sun Jianyun passed away in Beijing in 2003 at the age of 89. She never sought out grand duels or fueled supernatural legends. Instead, she spent her decades meticulously organizing the theories of Sun-style Tai Chi, Xingyi, and Bagua into written records.
"We do not practice to fight others; we practice to find the 'Li' (the underlying Principle)."
This was her frequent refrain. What she left behind was more than just a sequence of movements; it was the example of a traditional warrior who remained steadfast and serene through a century of both solitude and clamor.
