HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The Wudang Songxi Style Eight Diagram Palm (Baguazhang) is a profound expression of Taoist cosmology transformed into a dynamic martial art. Rooted in the principles of the 'I Ching' (Book of Changes), this style emphasizes the constant transformation of energy and position. The Songxi lineage preserves a unique interpretation of the Eight Diagram Palm that focuses heavily on internal cultivation and the 'Fluid Structure' of movement. Master Zhang Jiali, as a high-level successor, presents this technical routine not just as a combat system, but as a method of 'Internal Alchemy' designed to harmonize the practitioner with the natural flow of the universe. This DVD captures the esoteric essence of Wudang's internal heritage.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The core of this practice is 'Circle Walking,' which serves as the foundation for all technical routines. The footprint patterns are meticulously organized into Yin Yang Yu, Eight Diagram Figures, and Jiugong (Nine Palaces), requiring the practitioner to maintain constant motion and orientation. A distinguishing feature of the Songxi Style is the fulfillment of the palm's potential; the palm is used almost exclusively to replace the punch, allowing for more complex 'Spiral Energy' and 'Silk Reeling' applications. The movements are elegant and continuous, mimicking the 'Wandering Clouds and Flowing Water' aesthetic while maintaining a hidden martial lethality.
BIOMECHANICAL PRINCIPLES
Biochemically, the Eight Diagram Palm is a masterclass in 'Dynamic Equilibrium.' Master Zhang Jiali demonstrates how to maintain structural integrity while navigating complex circular paths. The power is generated through the 'Kinetic Chain' of the legs and waist, with the 'Kua' (inguinal fold) acting as the pivot for rapid directional changes. The instruction focuses on the 'Adhere and Follow' principle, teaching the student how to stick to an opponent's center while simultaneously moving to their flank. This requires a sophisticated level of 'Body-Mind Unity' and the ability to express Fa-Jin (Explosive Power) from any angle or posture.
MARTIAL APPLICATIONS AND LINEAGE
The martial applications of Wudang Eight Diagram Palm are centered on evasion, flanking, and the use of centrifugal force to unbalance the adversary. Master Zhang explains how the circular footwork creates openings that are inaccessible in linear styles. Beyond combat, the routine is highly valued for its health benefits; regular practice is said to improve joint mobility, enhance cardiovascular health, and promote longevity. This DVD provides a rare and authoritative look into the Songxi lineage's internal methods, offering a clear pedagogical path for both martial efficiency and spiritual cultivation.

Master Zhang Jiali
Master Zhang Jiali (b. 1969), a native of Dangshan, Anhui Province, is a highly accomplished contemporary master of Wudang internal martial arts. He is recognized as a 13th-generation authentic lineage holder of the Wudang Songxi Clan (武当松溪派).
With deep roots in both traditional martial arts and Daoist culture, Master Zhang is renowned for integrating Combat Applications with Daoist health cultivation, creating a complete internal training system.
1. Lineage & Martial Heritage
Master Zhang’s martial journey spans both Buddhist and Daoist arts, studying under some of the most prestigious traditional masters of the late 20th century:
Traditional Foundation: In his youth, he was accepted as the closed-door disciple of Master Hu Jingzhang, the former president of the Anhui Martial Arts Association. Through this lineage, he systematically mastered Northern Shaolin, Xingyiquan, and Baguazhang. He later refined his Xingyi skills under the famous master Yan Xianjin.
Wudang Songxi Lineage: In 1989, he traveled to the Wudang Mountains to live and train in Daoist temples. There, he became a formal disciple of Master You Mingsheng, a legendary 12th-generation master of the Wudang Songxi Clan. Master You transmitted the inner chamber methods and secret forms of the system to Zhang, establishing him as a 13th-generation lineage holder.
2. Core Artistry & Technical Style
Master Zhang’s system incorporates Wudang Songxi Internal Arts, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, Tai Chi, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). His technical style is characterized by practical self-defense, fluid coordination, and internal energetic power (Neigong).
Wudang Songxi Secret Forms
The Songxi Style focuses on "overcoming hardness with softness" and "striking the moment contact is made." Master Zhang is globally recognized for demonstrating and archiving key Songxi forms:
Wudang Songxi Eight-Array Palm (八阵掌 / Bazhen Zhang): A dynamic style of Baguazhang based on the eight trigrams of the I Ching. It features continuous, fluid palm changes and rapid footwork.
Songxi Secret Short Staff (武当蝙蝠棍 / Bat Staff or Tiger-Tail Whip): A highly practical short-weapon system emphasizing speed, deception, and countering an opponent's force right at its turning point.
Integration of Martial Arts and Medicine
Master Zhang champions the concept of "Martial Arts and Medicine Coming from the Same Source." His practice balances explosive Internal Power (Fa Li) with the regulation of the body's meridians through Daoist standing meditation (Zhan Zhuang) and breathwork (Tu Na).
HERITAGE COLLECTION: This instructional media is part of the Chinoiserie2008 Traditional Wushu Collection. Our mission is to preserve the authentic lineage and technical standards of Chinese martial arts through systematic digital documentation.
